This consortium brings together molecular biologists, physiologists and engineers to work towards optimising algal bioenergy for commercial exploitation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Land-based bioenergy crops create serious economic and environmental concerns, which include the sequestering of huge areas of arable land or ecologically sensitive regions (such as rain forests) for their growth, the introduction of competition to food production, and a concomitant increase in the price of staple food. In contrast, aquatic-based large-scale algal culturing facilities can be sited on any land, including waste or industrial sites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Bio-diesel from microalgae is being looked upon as a possible remedy to global warming and increase price of gas. There are strains of algae such as Botryococcus braunii, that have a large content of oil (lipids) which can be used as fuels. Microalgae can produce many times more oil per hectare of land, or even per ton of water, than higher plant vegetation, such as Jatropha or even palm oil. Use of bio-oil ensures net-zero carbon emissions, thereby keeping a check on the global warming issue.   Other algae such as Chlamydomonal reinhadtti , whose genome has been recently sequenced, known to produce hydrogen under certain environmental conditions, providing another, longer-term, approach for alternative fuels.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Algae display a remarkable degree of metabolic versatility, with many species able to produce long-chain liquid hydrocarbons that require minimal processing to be used as fuel; essentially these algae produce and excrete diesel! They can also divert photosynthetic energy into another ready-to-use fuel, hydrogen. In addition, algal growth can be directly coupled to other industrial processes, in particular the scrubbing of CO2 from flue gas and the removal of nitrates and phosphates from wastewater, which not only has a cost benefit, but can reduce the carbon footprint of industrial processes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, there are still many technical difficulties which need to be understood in order to deploy algae for mass production of biofuels, Bio-fuel from algae is one of the many potential solutions that requires investigation to simultaneously tackle both the crises of both energy supply.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The overall aim of ABC is to improve the flux from photon to fuel. We are currently investigating a number of different algal bioenergy applications:&lt;br /&gt;The production of biomass and biodiesel, with concomitant sequestration of CO2 from flue gases, and treatment of wastewater.&lt;br /&gt;Use of cyanobacteria for the production of bio-photovoltaic panels.&lt;br /&gt;Algal hydrogen production.&lt;br /&gt; We are actively seeking industrial partners with whom to collaborate to test our ideas.
